Who Are Dictionary Makers and Editors
All members of this board are dictionary editors. Some of us are trained linguists, and some are not. Irrespective of the degrees we have, dictionary making is something not all trained linguists can do expertly--every dictionary editor or dictionary maker needs to have a long practical experience of making and editing dictionary. Persons from every discipline can become dictionary makers and dictionary editors, if they have the passion and the persistence, the two things the trade cannot do without. Besides these, you have to know some basic things about linguistics, which you can learn on the way.
What We Do in This Board
In this board, we do everything dictionary makers and editors do--defining words, giving their phonetic transcriptions, determining parts of speech, splitting definitions if required, analyzing words morphologically, working out the etymology, giving or finding examples, and so on.
This is huge work, and no person is expert in all these fields, meaning that each dictionary entry is a work of several experts. There is no shame in the inability of a dictionary editor working out all the details of an entry. Other editors and dictionary makers will join in, and this is the purpose of this board. The content of each post we make here is not supposed to be complete and final. There will most probably be important details left out, or they may have errors (minor or major). Other editors and dictionary makers will pay attention to these areas in their comments, and we will eventually arrive at a best form we can attain that far. Then the details will get moved to the dictionary software for uploading to our dictionary site.
Hands-on Exercise for Young Dictionary Makers and Editors
Engaged in the exercised described above, young people who want to become dictionary makers and/or editors have the best opportunity they can probably get in life demanded of them by the career.
